one-on-one mentorship
Arguably the two biggest struggles students face nowadays is:
There is a lot of research that shows when students have a strong sense of their identity and know their purpose, they are more likely to lead happy and successful lives. In addition, they tend to perform better academically as well.
Research also shows that having another adult, outside of the parents, invest in a child’s wellbeing and success is a critical key factor. Our one-on-one mentorship program has proven to have the most successful results for a family.
Our measurable outcomes are:
Of course, there are no guarantees as every family situation is different. But with the One-on-One Mentoring packages, we know we have done everything possible to set up your child for success. Another benefit to the One-on-One mentoring packages is there will be very little time spent by the parent on the college process itself.

Freshman One-on-One mentorship program
Freshman students should focus on transitioning successfully to High School. We begin working together in AUG and go through June. We help them become the best students they can be in the classroom and find extracurriculars that are of true interest to them.
During these 11 months we will focus on academic success. In addition to advising on high school course selection, We help your student learn to manage their time, develop effective study habits, and organize their work. Woven into these trainings are aspects of social-emotional learning and executive functioning which are critical to academic success across all grade levels.
Some basic level assessments that measure your child's learning style and what helps them feel satisfied will be conducted.
Parents will undergo a review of their financial situation to assess potential financial aid opportunities for when it's time to apply to college. Also, this helps determine what is a financially feasible cost for college.

sophomore one-on-one mentorship program
Building off the lessons from the Freshman package, Sophomore students continue to focus on their academic success, which includes preparing to do their best on the SAT or ACT. We begin working together in AUG and go through June. The goal is to have your student prepared to take the SAT or ACT in the fall of their Junior year. Even in a world of "test-optional," those who submit good scores tend to get admitted and are offered scholarships more frequently than those who do not.
This is the year we start evaluating colleges based on their “fit” (academic, financial, and social criteria). Your student will be encouraged to start interacting with college representatives. Campus visits are encouraged, and a campus visit checklist will be provided.
A further review of high school courses to help your student achieve their goals will be conducted. We will also begin shifting from the common extracurriculars all the other students participate in and look to extracurricular activities that will help your student standout in a crowd of college applications.
One of the most meaningful goals during the sophomore year will be an aptitude test. Aptitudes are cognitive dispositions that predispose students to excel at certain tasks. Hence, an aptitude test measures the natural abilities a student has in a particular task-oriented arena. Aptitudes are not the same as skills. Skills can be learned. Aptitudes are innate and research shows they are fully formed by the time a child is 15 years old. There are only 3 centers in America that offer a true aptitude test. But only one of them offers an online remote option. This is a highly coveted feature of the one-on-one mentorship.

junior one-on-one program
Coming off the academic preparation from the previous years’ packages, in August Juniors will be finishing up their SAT or ACT test prep with some practice exams that mimic the real thing. The goal is to take the official SAT or ACT test in Oct of the Junior year.
After the SAT or ACT exams are completed, Juniors will shift their focus onto financial literacy…something that is generally not taught in high schools anymore. We feel financial literacy is important when it comes to making a an expensive decision such as picking a college.
The list of colleges will be fine-tuned to reflect a good fit (academic, financial, and social criteria) for your student. Students will begin first drafts of their college application essays.
Students will request letters of recommendation from teachers before their junior year finishes.
Guidance on financial aid, scholarships, and other strategies to help make college cheaper will be offered to the parents.
Further assessments of your student’s emotional strengths, personality, what drives them to excel, and what helps them feel satisfied will be conducted by the time June rolls around.

Senior one-on-one mentorship program
The senior year is where the previous three years’ worth of preparation materializes into successful college applications. Beginning in August seniors will be working on their college application essays. There will be many reviews of the essays where we will refine them so the essays reflect the best qualities of your child. The goal is to have all college applications submitted in October.
In November, we will work with the parents to make sure the FAFSA (and CSS PROFILE when needed) is submitted accurately. Four out of five families submit a FAFSA with mistakes. With our guidance, your Financial Aid applications will be correct. Your child will be encouraged to apply to scholarships at the same time.
In the Spring, we will review the financial aid offer letters and sort out what each school’s net cost is estimated to be. If needed, we will help guide you through any appropriate appeal process in attempt to negotiate for more free money. Lastly, we will guide you through the various financing options should you opt to take out a loan to help pay for college.

You are only eligible to enroll in the one-on-one mentorship program during the Freshman or Fall of Sophomore year. New Juniors and Seniors are not eligible. If you are interested in this one-on-one mentorship program, we will need to schedule a meeting to make sure we are a good fit for each other. We limit the participation in this program to only 5 students per class so we also need to make sure we have room.
JP made my dreams come true. It's as simple as that. My parents immigrated to America to provide me a better life. They told me that if I studied hard enough and got good grades, I could get into any school that I wanted to. And then I could become anything I wanted to be. I always wanted to go to USC. JP mentored my for over three years and helped me achieve my goal of getting admitted into USC. At first my parents said I couldn't go because they couldn't afford it. But again, JP helped me qualify for enough financial aid to pay for all my schooling. I got to go to my dream school because of JP. |
comprehensive college planning with an expert

Many families try to navigate the college process on their own. What ends up happening is the family either asks their friends what they did or they join an online support group asking strangers what they did. The problem is then the family simply makes the same mistakes as everyone else. How do we know this? It's from experience.
When JP was a director in the financial aid office, he witnessed new families making the same mistakes year after year. When he tried helping them, he learned they either followed the advice of their high school counselor or their family friends. The problem is none of them are experts when it comes to planning for college.
We are also members of many online support groups that are set up, and advice given, by well-meaning families. But these online chats/blogs/forums often spread information that ends up hurting most families because it is so generic or it was customized for their situation. Even if the advice is customized for one family, there is little chance that it will work for your unique situation.

"My personal experience with trying to decide what I wanted to do after high school is similar to many others. I talked with my high school counselor, but never received a straight forward answer about possible options. I knew the general field I wanted to study, but I didn't know where to go. All I knew about was colleges in my area. I didn't think I had the ability or knowledge about other schools to be able to attend them. I didn't know which schools were prestigious in business. Josh was very attentive and knowledgeable about which schools fit my requirements. The service he provided in regards to colleges helped me understand that the "price tag" isn't as important; because some schools have excellent financial aid and abilities to help cover the student's cost. Josh was able to figure out which colleges gave the best aid and figured out a rough estimate of what I would receive, so I knew which colleges I should be interested in. I was also told about other opportunities besides college and given helpful insight I had never heard before. I can say with confidence that Josh provided a unique and extraordinary experience which helped me to make the best decision for me after high school."
